MITCHELL SCHOOL DISTRICT VOCAL MUSIC STAFF

Originally from Papillion, NE, Nic Caberos is proud to call Mitchell his new home. At MSD, Mr. Caberos oversees all Kernel Choirs, music directs the Fall Musical, directs the award-winning "Friend de Coup", assists with middle school show choir, and eats copious amounts of Taco Bell. 

Anna Heeren is in her 11th year of teaching. She teaches 6th grade general music, 8th grade guitar, and middle school choir. She also directs Maximum Velocity show choir.  She and her husband Micah and have four children Ellis (9), Sawyer (7), Israel (5), and Harvest (1).  In the summer, Mrs. Heeren enjoys taking care of her chickens and gardening.

Kim Bruguier is in her 18th  year as a music educator. Mrs.Bruguier teaches elementary general music, beginning band, and choir at LB Williams Elementary in Mitchell. She also directs the middle school Exclamation show choir, and is the director and choreographer for the MHS Colorguard. 

She and her husband Lee have two children, Max and Amelia. In her free time she enjoys camping and traveling. 

Jamee Kattner is in her 1st year of teaching as the K–5 Elementary Music Teacher at Longfellow Elementary and the Middle School Musical Director. Originally from Huron, Jamee graduated from South Dakota State University in May of 2025 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and proudly served as Miss South Dakota 2025, representing the state at Miss America. Through her community service initiative, Music’s Power to Inspire, she has shared the joy of music with students, families, and individuals across South Dakota. As the fifth music educator in her family, Jamee is passionate about creating meaningful musical experiences that foster creativity, build confidence, and bring people together. She is excited to inspire the next generation of musicians both in the classroom and on the stage!

Hannah Wehlander is in her 3rd year of teaching music and 5th Grade Band at Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary. Wehlander also directs the frontline of the MHS Marching Band and is director of the Middle School Musical. In December of 2021, Hannah graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a Bachelors degree in music education. Wehlander recently was elected onto the board of directors for SDMEA as the Social Media Coordinator. In her spare time, Hannah enjoys playing in the Mitchell Municipal Band, singing with the DWU community choir, and performing at the Area Community Theatre here in Mitchell. 

Joel Van Peursem is in his fourth year at Mitchell School District. He is the director of all middle school bands, assists with the high school marching band, directs the high school fall musical pit, and is the director of Severe Tire Damage (FDC's pit band). In his free time, he loves to spend time with his wife Kaitlyn and their daughter CeCe!

Sam Mulligan is a Pop/R&B recording artist, songwriter, and musician based in Nashville, Tennessee. Originally from central Illinois, he graduated from Mt. Zion High Schol and is an alumni of the Swingsations. He also holds a Bachelor's of Music in Commercial Vocal Performance from Belmont University.

As an artist, Sam's original catalog has accumulated over half a million streams across all platforms. He recently performed as a backup dancer for Megan Moroney and Lady Antebellum on the CMA Country Christmas special and has spent the last few years touring as a backup dancer for country music artist Walker Hayes. Other notable performances include the College Football National Championship, the NBA All-Star Game Weekend, and recently recording background vocals for Disney's newest 70th anniversary parade.

Sam is also a full-time choreographer, clinician, and adjudicator, working with esteemed show choirs across the country. He continues to train in various dance styles with top choreographers and studios in Nashville and is grateful for the opportunity to work with so many incredible students and music educators through his love for music.
